                                            Farmers Market Tip  7/27/2009

                                            Go to buy your veggies a few hours before closing.   You can save money and the person selling the veggies does not have to carry them back.

                                            Sticky spoons

                                            When using your measuring spoons for sticky ingredients run the spoon you will be using under hot water first.  It makes the it release more easily when cleaning up.
                                            Inexpensive, environmentally friendly rinsing agent for your dishwasher
                                            Fill the compartment of your dishwasher with plain white vinegar, which works well to keep spots from forming
                                            Make your own Veggie Cleaner
                                            1 Cup purified Water
                                            1 cup distilled white vinegar
                                            1 tablespoon baking soda
                                            20 drops of grapefruit seed extract (available at health food store)

                                            Combine all ingredients.  Use a funnel to put in spray bottle.  Spray cleaner on produce and rinse 10 minutes later.

                                            Basil: Store basil at room temperature by placing the basil in a glass with only the stems in water


                                            Nuts for Snacks   2/23/10

                                            Choose nuts as snacks or on a salad or in main dishes.  Almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamia and pistachios to name a few.   Nut consumption has been known to be good for heart disease, diabetes and lowers cholesterol levels.  They are good for fiber, vitamin E, folic acid, copper, magnesium and the amino acid arginine.

                                            4 digits  =  Conventionally grown
                                            5 Digits starting with 9 =  Organically grown
                                            5 Digits starting with 8  = Genetically engineered.

                                            Try remembering it like this, 9 is sublime and 8 can put you in a state
